DANSON HOUSE, BEXLEY: Notes on the Original Plaster Relief Scheme in the Library and its Restoration

Author(s): Richard Lea, Chris Miele

This report forms part of a wider study of the house and park. During the restoration works to the Principal floor interiors, building investigation and analysis revealed that the plaster roundel in the closet room P7, east of the stair well on the Principal Floor, was originally hung in the Library, room P4, above the fireplace. The subsequent decision to return the plaque to its original location in the Library allowed the recording of the evidence for its original installation and its relocation to the closet room P7. The following notes describe the original plaster relief scheme in the Library, parallels for the original scheme and the evidence for the reconstruction of missing detail, the resiting of the central plaque in the closet, probably c 1865, the recent investigation and analysis and its return to its original location as part of the restoration programme.
