A NOTE ON THE PETROLOGY OF SOME EARLY SAXON POTTERY FROM THE 1974-1975 EXCAVATIONS AT EMPINGHAM, RUTLAND

Author(s): D F Williams

A small programme of thin section analysis was undertaken on six sherds of early Saxon pottery from the inhumation cemetery at Empingham. The sherds are dated c. mid sixth century A.D. to the early seventh century A.D. The non-plastic inclusions identified in the majority of the sherds are compatible with the local geology and, in the absence of further information, probably indicate a reasonably local origin: i.e. limestone, ooliths, sandstone, iron ore. However, one sherd contained granitic inclusions, which may point to an origin in the Charnwood Forest area to the north west of Leicester. An increasing number of early-mid Saxon pottery in this fabric are being found on sites mainly in the east of the country.
