REPORT ON THE SLAGS AND RESIDUES FROM DERWENTCOTE STEEL FURNACE, COUNTY DURHAM

Author(s): J G McDonnell

Ten types of slag or residue were identified from excavations of the 18th-19th century Derwentcote cementation furnace. Six of these were by-products of the process, and included metal, furnace lining and chest sealing material. The others were not associated with the cementation process, and explanations of their genesis are proposed. The report includes chemical and mineralogical analyses.
