TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM UPWICH, DROITWICH, 1983-84.
Author(s): C Groves
Timbers from structures ranging from Roman to post-medieval in date were sampled for tree-ring analysis with a view to providing a more precise dating framework. Samples from the timbers required for conservation were examined by Hillam (1985a) but the results are also included in this report. The oak timbers produced three site master curves spanning the periods 256BC- AD61, AD955- 1415 and AD1685- 1742. Two further samples were dated to the early 17th century. Amaster curve was also produced from the post-medieval elm samples. This was dated by comparison with oak reference chronologies demonstrating the potential importance for both archaeology and dendrochronology of successful interspecies crossmatching.
