TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM WALTON-LE-DALE, PRESTON, 1981-83

Author(s): C Groves

Tree-ring analysis was carried out on timbers from four wells associated with an extensive Roman military estab-lishment at Walton-le-Dale, Preston. A site chronology covering the period 235 BC - AD 119 was produced from the oak timbers. A 138 year fir chronology was also produced from 13 timbers associated with well C, although this remains undated. The felling date of the structural timbers from well B was AD 120, which is consistent with the expected second century date. The timbers from well A, dated archaeologically to the third century were felled after AD 105 and probably before AD 150, indicating that they could be contemporary with well B.
