Monument Protection Programme, Single Monument Class Description: Post Medieval Formal Gardens

Though the existence of the remains of former gardens and parks has been recognised by both field archaeologists and garden historians for almost a century, it is only in recent years that their importance and complexity has been fully appreciated (Taylor 1991; Jacques 1997b). As a result, unlike, for example, hill forts or deserted settlements, the amount of research into them has been relatively small and major aspects still remain to be discovered and understood.
