THE FISH BONES FROM CULVER STREET, COLCHESTER.

A total of 4,801 fish bones were recovered from a seriesof excavations at Culver Street. These were mainly of Roman and Medieval date. A wide variety of species wererecovered, but few were present in large numbers. Inthe Roman deposits eel, herring and flatfishes were imp-ortant, in the Medieval deposits eel and herring arestill important, and there is an increase in the relat-ive proportions of cod. It is suggested that the changein the Medieval period reflects a more intensive fishery
