THE TREE RING ANALYSIS OF SIX SECULAR BUILDINGS FROM THE CITY OF HEREFORD

Author(s): Ian Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis of a number of buildings within Hereford was undertaken primarily to provide information for a monograph on the historic secular buildings in the city. Eleven buildings were assessed for their suitability for dendrochronological analysis. Sixty-three samples were obtained from the five buildings that were selected for extensive sampling and analysis. Two samples were also obtained from an otherwise unsuitable building. Dates were obtained for six phases from five buildings. No dating evidence was obtained from one building. The results of the analyses reported here have enabled a number of buildings in the city to be more accurately interpreted, have helped illuminate the developmental sequence of surviving building types, and have assisted the understanding of changing property ownership within the city.A continuous and replicated tree-ring chronology for Hereford covering the period AD 1111 to AD 1617 has been produced.
