ANALYSIS OF NON-FERROUS METAL OBJECTS FROM THE PAGAN SAXON CEMETERIES AT MUCKING, ESSEX

Author(s): M P Heyworth

A selection of non-ferrous metal objects from the two Pagan Saxon cemeteries at Mucking were analysed to identify the alloys being used. The objects were analysed qualitatively using energy dispersive X-ray fluoresence. The majority of the copper alloys were found to be bronzes, often with a few percent of zinc and lead suggesting that the alloys were made from reusing scrap metal. However there are no obvious correlations between the alloying elements which would suggest which metals are being mixed together. The pattern of alloy usage at Mucking is similar to that from contemporary sites in southern Britain, although the number of analyses available for comparison is rather small.
