POLLEN ANALYSIS OF EXCAVATIONS AT WEST HEATH, WEST SUSSEX.

Author(s): R G Scaife

Excavation of the valley side and bottom below the Bronze Age barrow cemetery at West Heath was directed by Dr P. L. Drewett (1984). This revealed deep sequences of colluvial deposits in which a number of buried soils were found. These were humo-ferric podzols which, being acid, contained finely preserved pollen. Pollen analyses of these soils indicate a vegetation which is comparable with earlier data obtained from the old land surfaces underlying the Bronze Age barrows; that is, a vegetation dominated by Tilia woodland with Corylus scrub and Calluna dominated heathland. Exceptionally high pollen frequencies of Hedera have been found. These data are discussed in relation to similar evidence from other southern English sites.
