THE IRONWORKING RESIDUES FROM 16-22 COPPERGATE, YORK.

Author(s): J G McDonnell

Examination of the ironworking residues show that ironsmithing was carried out on the site throughout theAnglo-Scandinavian Period (with possible continuationinto the Medieval Period). There was also evidence foriron smelting, probably a one-off operation duringPhase 4B of the site. Examples of smelting and smithingslag were examined to establish criteria by which theycould be distinguished. These were then applied toslags which required confirmation of the morphologicalidentification. The smelting slags showed that a lowmanganese bearing ore had been used. Some of the slags, both smelting and smithing were characterised by thepresence of lime/ iron oxide inclusions.
