Weston Hall, Weston Upon Trent, South Derbyshire: Tree-ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on core and slice samples obtained from 27 oak timbers used in the construction of different parts of Weston Hall. This analysis produced a single site chronology comprising all 27 samples, which was 149 rings long overall. These rings were dated as spanning the years AD 1480–1628. Interpretation of the sapwood and the heartwood/sapwood boundary rings on the dated samples suggests that all the timbers were cut as part of a single programme of felling in, or around, AD 1628 indicating construction shortly afterwards.
