Advising on Historic England's Future Engagement with Intangible Cultural Heritage

Author(s): WSP

In 2019 Historic England commissioned a report to assess the opportunities and risks of incorporating more Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) into our strategic activities and programmes. To date Historic England has not focused on Intangible Cultural Heritage as a separate activity, but treated it as part of how we perceive and value the physical heritage and influences how we respond to casework, public engagement and other activities such as our High Street Heritage Action Zone work, and building craft skills training programmes. The report also highlights some areas of potential where Historic England could expand its engagement with ICH but also begins to explore some of the resourcing implications. We believe that the area of ICH warrants further investigation in terms of helping to deliver the government’s wider aspirations for the historic environment. We hope to further explore how we can effectively engage with ICH internally, its implications and opportunities for our work, and how it can add value to our activities. This is a live area of investigation for us and this research provides an important aid to our thinking.
