The Briton’s Arms, 9 Elm Hill, Norwich, Norfolk: Tree-ring Analysis of Oak Timber

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on 14 of the 26 samples obtained from various timbers in the Briton’s Arms in Norwich, Norfolk. This analysis produced a single site chronology comprising nine samples having an overall length of 219 rings. These rings are dated as spanning the years AD 1188–1406 with the timbers represented being imported from the Baltic region. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples would suggest that the nine timbers represented were cut at some point during the period AD 1407–20. Five of the 14 measured samples remain ungrouped and undated, while 12 other samples had too few rings for reliable analysis.
