EXAMINATION OF THE EVIDENCE FOR BELL FOUNDING AND OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES FROM TRENCH 2, THETFORD, NORFOLK.

Author(s): P Wilthew

Mould and copper alloy casting waste from a possible early -mid 12th century AD bell casting pit and bell metal melting furnace were examined, together with unconnected samples of possible technological significance. Where appropriate the material was analysed qualitatively using X-ray fluorescence and three pieces of casting waste were analysed qualitatively by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The mould and casting waste were identified as bell mould and bell metal and the interpretation of the bell casting pit was confirmed. The identification of the bell metal melting furnace was less secure, but was probably correct. The other samples were of little technological significance.
