ISLES OF SCILLY, FIELDWORK 1991 :- POTENTIAL OF AUGER SURVEY OF INTERTIDAL PEATS

Author(s): Matt Canti, H C M Keeley, V Straker

Severely eroding intertidal peats, sometimes associated with archaeological features, have been surveyed and sampled on two beaches on the Isles of Scilly. Trial augering was done to assess the feasibility of carrying out an auger survey, to establish whether and how far peat extends beneath the beach deposits where it is not exposed. Long cores containing several bands of peat were obtained from St. Martin's and Tresco.
