THE ANALYTICAL EXAMINATION OF METALWORKING DEBRIS FROM THE 1989-90 RIBCHESTER GRAVEYARD EXCAVATIONS, LANCASHIRE

Author(s): D Starley

A broad-based analytical study was carried out on debris from the possible military fabrica. Techniques included metallography, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrometry, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based microanalysis. 234 kg of material from the site was examined. Most derived from the smithing of iron although ironsmelting and non-ferrous alloy casting debris was also present in limited quantities. Magnetic susceptibility measurement of soil samples was also used in an attempt to link the dumped debris with hearths on the site.
