ASHELDHAM: POLLEN ANALYSIS OF THE IRON AGE LAND SURFACE.

Author(s): R G Scaife

Pollen analysis of a buried soil and old land surface underlying an Iron hillfort at Asheldham, East Essex hasbeen carried out. Although poorly preserved, the pollenprovides evidence for the environment of the site immediately prior to construction of the monument. This has been shown to have been of grassland character but with some evidence of contemporaneous or earlier cereal cultivation. There is little evidence for remaining woodland in the vicinity, although the presence of hazelscrub has been noted.
