TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM ST ANDREW'S CHURCH, FORD, WEST SUSSEX

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge

Dendrochronological study of the nave roof of this grade I listed church revealed three phases of oak timbers. One tie beam is from a tree felled in spring AD 1363, though no other timbers are of this date. The wall-plates and a single rafter date from AD 1454-80. The remaining crown-post roof contains timbers felled c AD 1512. Experts agree that a wall painting, ?The Doom' is coeval with the crown-post roof, and therefore this study also provides important information for typological dating of other wall paintings in the region. The chancel roof and bellcott were found to contain fast-grown oaks that could not be dated.
