Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Manor Court House, Fore Street, Chard, Somerset

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Analysis undertaken on 12 samples taken from timbers of the roof of this building resulted in the construction of two dated site sequences. The first contains five samples, all from purlins, and spans the period AD 1409-1517. Three of these samples are from trees felled some time between AD 1528-53, with it being likely that the other two samples are also from trees felled at this time. The second contains six samples, taken from principal rafters and collars, and spans the period AD 1525-1630. One of the samples is from a timber which had complete sapwood and is thought to have been felled in c AD 1632, with it likely that a further five samples were also felled at this time. Tree-ring analysis has shown that the main timbers of the roof are from trees felled in c AD 1632, with construction thought to have occurred soon after this. Also incorporated in this roof are reused timbers of AD 1528-53, in the form of purlins.
