The Tree-Ring Dating of the Church of St Mary and All Saints, Broomfield, Taunton, Somerset

Three timbers from the nave roof of Church of St Mary and All Saints, Broomfield, Taunton, Somerset were sampled and dated, giving a reduced average felling date range of AD 1525-55. Although the five structural timbers sampled from the roof of the north aisle failed to date, a number of carved bosses and angels from both roofs were sampled, two bosses from the north aisle giving a combined felling date range of AD 1507-39. The results suggest that the north aisle and the nave were constructed at the same time, and that the carved angels and bosses were part of the original decorative scheme.
