Chemical analysis of the window glass from The Old Cottage, Grove Farm, Arran Way, Esher

Author(s): Francesca Gherardi

During conservation work at the 17th century Old Cottage in Esher, Surrey, several windows were uncovered beneath lath and plaster walling. Some glass samples were analysed by micro-XRF (X-ray fluorescence) spectroscopy to help with dating. The window glass exhibits a chemical composition typical of high-lime low-alkali (HLLA) glass manufactured between 1560 and 1700. In particular, the manganese content suggests that the windows are likely to date to around 1610 to 1700. The results indicate that the glass was probably part of the early building structure, rather than a Victorian addition to the building.
