Panel Paintings from the English Heritage Collections: LI.2023.54.6, English School, Lady Jane Grey or Lady Dacre: Tree-ring Analysis of an Oak Panel Painting

Author(s): Ian Tyers

A programme of tree-ring assessment, measurement and analysis was commissioned on a panel painting from the English Heritage Collections whilst the panel was undergoing conservation treatment at Rangers House Conservation Studios in 2024. Direct tree-ring measurement was undertaken both boards of this oak panel painting. The portrait sitter is conventionally identified Lady Jane Grey, but has also been identified as Mary Nevill, Lady Dacre. The tree-ring analysis dated both boards and identified them as being derived from timbers imported from the eastern Baltic. These timbers provide a likely usage date for the panel.
