THE CARBONISED PLANT REMAINS FROM EXCAVATIONS AT CHESTERS ROMAN BRIDGE ABUTMENT, CHESTERS, NORTHUMBERLAND

Author(s): J P Huntley

Seven bulk samples from features associated with the abutment of the Roman bridge at Chesters, Northumberland were analysed. Carbonised cereal remains of hulled barley and hexaploid wheats were recovered as well as a selection of weed and ruderal seeds. Oats and rye were present in low numbers. Both spelt and bread wheat were identified with a tentative suggestion that the latter was more abundant in the sample dated to the 3rd/4th century. The one sample with waterlogged preservation indicated natural silting and accumulation of water borne material rather than a deliberate dump.
