The Tree-Ring Dating of the Chapter House Roof, Christ Church, Oxford

Author(s): Daniel Miles, Michael Worthington

Altogether ten timbers were sampled from the primary roof structure of the Chapter House, Christ Church, Oxford. One sample without sapwood (ccch10) had been previously dated from earlier work in 1988, giving a terminus post quem for felling of after AD 1245 (Haddon-Reece et al 1989). This was combined with eight of the other nine samples to form a 119 - ring site master CHCHCH spanning the years AD1142-1260. Felling dates for these other samples ranged from spring AD 1259 to winter AD 1260/1. This date will help refine the building chronology of Christ Church (St Frideswide’s Priory) which has poor documentary sources surviving, and has demonstrated this to be the earliest known surviving roof in Oxford.
