THE ANALYTICAL EXAMINATION OF IRONWORKING DEBRIS FROM THETFORD, MILL LANE, NORFOLK 1995

Author(s): Roger Doonan, D Starley

150 kg of industrial debris from late Saxon and medieval contexts was visually examined and selectively analysed using qualitative X-ray fluorescence analysis. The range of metalworking inferred from the debris included iron smelting, iron smithing, copper alloy casting and silver refining. The latter was probably associated with coin production and must be considered together with the probable coin die found on the site. Spatial and chronological analysis of the debris indicated that the metalworkers tended to specialise in particular metals and that different crafts were important on the site at different periods. Iron smelting occurred early in the occupation of the site, during the tenth and eleventh centuries, whilst copper casting became more prevalent from the eleventh century onwards.
