Analysis of Medieval Painted Pottery Sherds from Wood Quay Dublin

Author(s): Sarah Paynter

Two sherds of decorated medieval pottery from Wood Quay, Dublin, were analysed using XRF spectrometry. The pigments used for the decoration were identified as vermilion or cinnabar, orpiment (and possibly realgar), carbon, calcium carbonate, haematite and a white lead compound. The sherds are unusual because the pigments are typical of materials used in painting and manuscript illustration rather than pottery decoration. It is unlikely that the sherds were intended to be glazed or fired again; they are fragments of finished objects.
