PETROLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF NEOLITHIC POTTERY FROM MAIDEN CASTLE, DORSET.

Author(s): D F Williams

A fabric analysis was undertaken on three selected sherds of neolithic pottery from the recent excavations at Maiden Castle. One of the sherds was shown to be made of gabbroic clay from tthe Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. A heavy mineral separaton produced a residue with a high tenor of amphibole, not mica as reported by Sofranoff on a similar analysis of gabbroic pottery from Carn Brea. The two other sherds contained predominantly flint and shell respectively and probably represent locally-made pottery, though three samples of clay collected from the region of Maiden Castle failed to match the fabric of the sherds.
