Week, Berry Pomeroy, Devon: Historic Buildings Assessment

Author(s): Rebecca Lane

The house at Week, Berry Pomeroy, represents the surviving elements of a late 16th century wing which originally formed part of a larger house. The possibility that there was a medieval house on the site has not been discounted, although the extant section does not contain any fabric of a date earlier than the 16th century, other than one reused fireplace lintel. The features of the wing, as origianlly devised, suggest that it was part of a building of some status. Subsequently however it appears to have been used as a farmhouse, with the construction of the adjacent farm buildings, and ultimately it was split into two smaller cottages before being abandoned as a dwelling in the late 1950s.
