REPORT ON WORKED STONE FROM WEST HILL, ULEY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Author(s): F E S Roe

Twelve whetstones and thirteen quern fragments were examined. All the stone used was found to have been imported to the site. The whetstones, which range from Roman to post Roman in date, were made from two materials only, Kentish Rag and Pennant sandstone or related sandstone. Four whetstones were thin sectioned to obtain more detailed information. The quern fragments, which range from Late Iron Age to post Roman in date, all appear to be made from varieties of Upper Old Red Sandstone, either quartz conglomerate, pebbly sandstone or plain sandstone. Similar varieties of stone have been investigated in the Trelleck/ Penallt area of Monmouthshire. These whetstone and quern materials are known from othersites of Iron Age and Roman date, and may be expected from such sites in Gloucestershire, but it was found that little information had been recorded in the literature.
