TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM ST.MARY MAGDALENE CHURCH, COWDEN, KENT

Author(s): Robert Howard, R R Laxton, Cliff Litton

Twenty samples from the tower and lower-spire timbers of St Mary Magdalene church, Cowden, were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced two site chronologies. The first, consisting of ten samples, has 183 rings spanning the period AD 1257-1439. The second site chronology, composed of five samples, has 123 rings spanning the period AD 1254-1377. A single sample of 121 rings was dated as spanning the period AD 1665-1785. Although cross-matching each other with a low t-value the two site chronologies were combined to make a third of 186 rings spanning the period AD 1254-1439.
