Kenwood Dairy Cottage, Hampstead Heath, London Borough of Camden: Report on Geophysical Survey, April 2019

Author(s): Neil Linford

A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey was conducted at the Kenwood Dairy Cottage, Hampstead Heath, London Borough of Camden, to investigate the immediate vicinity of a large void which had opened at the site. The GPR survey was conducted in response to an urgent request from the English Heritage Trust and covered an area of 15 m x 10 m in the open area enclosed by the dairy cottage buildings where an approximately 3 m wide void had opened to a depth of at least 1.5 m from the ground surface. The results revealed a degree of near-surface inhomogeneity, perhaps related to made ground, and evidence for structural remains, possibly associated with drainage or buried conduits. Although no direct explanation for the void could be made from the GPR anomalies comparison between the local topography at the time of the survey and previous measurements made in 2011 suggested ongoing deflation of the ground surface.
