PETROLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF BRONZE AGE AND IRON AGE POTTERY FROM NORTON FITZWARREN, SOMERSET.

Author(s): D F Williams

A selection of Early Bronze Age to Late Iron Age fabrics were examined in thin section to confirm the validity of a provisional identification in the hand- specimen. On the basis of the range of non-plastic inclusions present in the sherds a number of fabric divisions were made: (1) grog tempered (E/MBA); (2) vesicular (IA), possibly Peacock's B1 group from the Malvern Hills; (3) quartz/mudstone (LIA), ? local; (4) felspathic tuff (E/MBA, LBA/EIA, MIA), perhaps from Beacon Hill near Shepton Mallet; (5) shale (MIA), ? local; (6) quartzite (E/MBA, LBA/EIA), ? local.
