Old Farmhouse, School Lane, Norwell, Nottinghamshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Robert Howard, Matt Hurford, Cathy Tyers

Analysis by dendrochronology was undertaken on 10 samples obtained from Old Farmhouse, Norwell, Nottinghamshire. This resulted in the production of two site chronologies, NRWBSQ01 and NRWBSQ02. Site chronology NRWBSQ01, comprising three samples with an overall length of 158 rings, can be dated as spanning the years AD 1178–1335, while site chronology NRWBSQ02, comprising two samples with an overall length of 138 rings, can be dated as spanning the years AD 1176–1313. Sample NRWB09 was dated individually as spanning the years AD 1391–1550. Interpretation of the sapwood and the heartwood/sapwood boundaries indicate that the timbers thought to be associated with the initial construction of the house were all probably felled in AD 1337–62. The ground-floor ceiling contains a main beam with an estimated felling date in the range AD 1565–90. The other four measured samples remain ungrouped and undated.
