REPORT ON THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ST PETER PENNY AND AETHELSTAN PENNY COIN DIES FROM COPPERGATE YORK

X-radiography and X-ray diffraction were used to analyse the two coin dies recovered during the excavation of the coppergate site. The dies are made from iron alloys. The results show that the die caps were made from two or more pieces. A model is proposed for the manufacture of the dies.
