THE TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF COFFIN TIMBERS EXCAVATED AT THE CHURCH OF ST PETER, BARTON ON HUMBER, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE

Author(s): Ian Tyers

The tree-ring analysis of samples of wood excavated in graves between AD 1978 and AD 1985 at the church of St Peter, Barton on Humber is reported here. One hundred and twenty five oak boards from 33 of the 34 graves retaining timbers have been examined, along with six pine boards from the other burial. Samples have been obtained from 104 boards which were suitable for dendrochronological analysis (98 oak and six pine). Absolute dates were obtained from 94 oak boards. These result in tree-ring dates for 31 of the burials. The results indicate the burials with surviving oak boards mostly date from between AD 1071 and AD 1134. There is a cluster of burials between AD 1129 and AD 1134. All the dated oak coffins are constructed of locally grown oak. The pine child's coffin is presumed to be imported. One of the two boards whose original coffin allocations have been lost subsequent to its excavation is positively identified, the other is tentatively identified.
