TREE-RING ANALYSIS AND DATING OF TIMBERS FROM ANNETWELL STREET, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA, 1981-84.

Author(s): C Groves

Dendrochronological analysis of over 500 timbers from Annetwell Street, Carlisle, produced two absolutely dated reference chronologies spanning 247BC-AD96 and AD930-1219. Felling dates were obtained for several Roman structures associated with the first and second timber forts, allowing the production of a precise dating framework within the period AD72-97. The founding of the fort at Carlisle is shown to be early Flavian, which is slightly earlier than previously thought. Felling dates were also produced for a medieval well and a medieval pit.
