Pitchforks and Numbers 1 And 2 Greasley Cottage, Main Street, Norwell, Nottinghamshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers
Author(s): Robert Howard, Matt Hurford, Cathy Tyers
Analysis by dendrochronology of 15 out of 16 samples from the building comprising Pitchforks and 1 and 2 Greasleys Cottages, Norwell, Nottinghamshire, resulted in the production of a single site chronology, NRWASQ01, comprising 14 samples with an overall length of 124 rings, these rings dated as spanning the years AD 1624–1747. Interpretation of the sapwood and the heartwood/sapwood boundaries indicates that the majority of the timbers used as common rafters are likely to have been felled during the early/mid-eighteenth century, although it is possible that they represent more than one period of felling. The ground-floor ceiling in 1 Greasleys Cottages contains timbers of which at least one was felled in AD 1747, broadly contemporary with the common rafters. All of the dated timbers may therefore be associated with work in the first half of the eighteenth century. However, evidence suggests that these common rafters were reset at a later date, potentially associated with a partial raising of the roof. One measured sample remains ungrouped and undated.
