The Old House, Main Street, Norwell, Nottinghamshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Robert Howard, Matt Hurford, Cathy Tyers

Analysis by dendrochronology was undertaken on 12 samples obtained from The Old House, Main Street, Norwell, Nottinghamshire. This resulted in the production of two site chronologies: NRWCSQ01, comprising eight samples with an overall length of 155 rings, these rings dated as spanning the years AD 1340–1494, and NRWCSQ02, comprising two samples with an overall length of 90 rings, dated as spanning the years AD 1653–1742. Sample NRW-H12 has an overall length of 138 rings, dated as spanning the years AD 1470–1607. Interpretation of the sapwood and the heartwood/sapwood boundaries indicate that the structural timbers thought to be associated with the initial construction of the house were probably felled in AD 1494. The ground floor ceiling main beam is derived from a timber with an estimated felling date of AD 1607–30. The first floor ceiling contains a joist with an estimated felling date range of AD 1498–1523 and a main beam derived from a timber felled in AD 1742. A further timber in the south bay used to add structural integrity to the roof was also derived from a timber probably felled in AD 1742. One measured sample remains ungrouped and undated.
