The Market House, Ledbury, Herefordshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Matt Hurford

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on timbers at this building, resulting in the construction and dating of a single site sequence. This site sequence contains 16 samples and spans the period AD 1485–1617. One of these samples has complete sapwood and was felled in AD 1617. Interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood boundary of the other dated samples, where this exists, suggests these were also felled in AD 1617. Prior to tree-ring analysis, this building was thought to have been started in AD 1617, with work continuing in some form until its completion after AD 1655. These results demonstrate that it is quite likely that construction occurred in or soon after AD 1617 but has not provided any evidence that the building as seen today was anything other than a single-phase project.
