The Bobbin Mill, Stott Park, Finsthwaite, Cumbria: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Robert Howard, Alison Arnold

Pine timbers were sampled in the roof of the New Lathe Shed, the ground-floor ceiling of the original mill, and posts also on the ground-floor of the original mill. Four oak timbers were sampled in various locations within the complex. Analysis resulted in the dating of a single site sequence, STTPSQ01, which comprises eight pine samples from the New Lathe Shed roof and spans the period AD 1539–1817. The tree-ring dating suggests construction of this part of the mill after AD 1817 and before it appears on an Ordnance Survey map of AD 1869. No other timbers were successfully dated.
