Tree-Ring Analysis of Oak Timbers from Church Farm, Bringhurst, Leicestershire
Author(s): C Groves, Robert Howard, Christine Locatelli
Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on samples from 14 timbers associated with the main house and the abutting outbuilding. The analysis shows that the primary timbers from the main house were felled in AD 1781-2 indicating a late eighteenth century construction date. A reused timber from a ground floor ceiling in the main house and the only dated timber, a purlin, from the cruck construction outbuilding were both felled in the late sixteenth century or early seventeenth century. The original cruck structure of the outbuilding is thought to represent a single phase of construction of which the purlin is an integral element. This therefore potentially implies that the outbuilding is of this date, though this is based on the dating of only a single timber.
