ASSESSMENT OF THE METAL WORKING REMAINS FROM WESTHAWK FARM NEAR ASHFORD, KENT

Author(s): Justine Bayley, Sarah Paynter

A large amount (1.4 tonnes) of ironworking debris was recovered during the partial excavation of this Roman roadside settlement. The majority of finds from the site date between AD 70 and 250. Preliminary assessment of the ironworking assemblage indicates that iron-working activity was focused around two structures, one on either side of the road traversing the settlement. Slag-tapping iron-smelting furnaces operated in both areas. Primary smithing also occurred in at least one of these areas. These conclusions are supported by geophysical data and observations made during excavation. Some secondary smithing activity also took place on site but the location of this activity is unknown.
