Ulnaby Hall, High Coniscliffe, Darlington, County Durham: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Matt Hurford, Cathy Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on 11 of the 13 samples taken from the west-wing roof at Ulnaby Hall. This resulted in the production of two site chronologies, UBYASQ01 and UBYASQ02. These comprise eight and two samples with overall lengths of 116 rings and 120 rings, respectively. The first site chronology can be dated as spanning the years AD 1493–1608, whilst the second site chronology is undated. Interpretation of the heartwood/sapwood boundary on the dated samples indicates that the timber used in the construction of the roof probably represents a single programme of felling dated to AD 1608/09. This work appears likely to have been commissioned by Roger Tockets shortly after acquiring Ulnaby in AD 1608.
