THE TREE-RING DATING OF THE HOSPITAL OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, LICHFIELD, STAFFORDSHIRE

Author(s): Daniel Miles, Michael Worthington

Eight timbers were sampled at the Hospital of St John the Baptist, Lichfield, Staffordshire, all from the primary structure of the east range fronting St John Street. All the samples dated producing a 139-year chronology spanning the years AD 1356-1494. Felling dates range from early spring AD 1494 to spring AD 1495. This date confirms that the primary fabric of the building now standing was built as part of the AD 1495 reforming of the hospital by Bishop Smith as an almshouse and chapel. The date also suggests that planning for the new buildings started at least a year before the accepted date of foundation.
