Exeter Cathedral, Exeter, Devon. Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Roof of the Retrochoir

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton, Cathy Tyers

Core samples were obtained from 13 pine timbers in the roof of the retrochoir of Exeter Cathedral, Devon, as part of the English Heritage funded conifer research project. The analysis of these samples produced three site chronologies, EXTCPSQ01–SQ03, comprising two groups of three samples and one group of two samples. These site chronologies range in length from 147 rings to 259 rings. Despite being compared to an extensive collection of relevant reference material none of the three site chronologies, or any of the five remaining ungrouped samples, could be dated. However, whilst the material remains undated it is possible to demonstrate that some of the samples represent timbers felled within a few years of each other.
