ANALYTICAL RESULTS FOR METAL AND GLASS-WORKING CRUCIBLES FROM FRERE'S EXCAVATIONS AT VERULAMIUM, HERTS

Author(s): Justine Bayley

The metal-rich deposits on nearly 50 metalworking crucibles from 1st and 2nd century contexts were analysed qualitatively by XRF. Gold, silver and copper alloys were melted with different types of crucibles being preferentially used for different alloys. A group of 15 sherds from glassworking crucibles was also seen. Examination of the glassy deposits suggests they may be earlier than the 4th/5th century date assigned to them on stratigraphic grounds.
