A NOTE ON THE PETROLOGY OF MEDIAEVAL POTTERY FROM THE 1988-89 EXCAVATIONS AT ECKWEEK FARMSTEAD, AVON

Author(s): D F Williams

Fifty-one samples of late Saxon to later Medieaval pottery from Eckweek were thin sectioned for fabric characterisation. This showed nine broad fabric groupings: Quartz/Sedimentary Iron Ore; Chert/Sedimentary Iron Ore; Fossil Limestone/Sedimentary Iron Ore; Chertz/Quartz; Sphaerosiderate; Ironstone; Fossil Limestone; Calcite and Quartz. It was difficult to match these fabrics with previous petrological work done on pottery in the area, though the Ironstone group may be connected with Cheddar Fabric E. The majority of the pottery could well have been made at no great distance from Eckweek.
