SHEPHERD'S WHARF, PLYMOUTH, DEVON, ARCHAEOMAGNETIC DATING REPORT, 2000

Author(s): Paul Linford

Excavations at Shepherd's Wharf in Plymouth uncovered the remains of a clay pipe making kiln which is likely to be well dated from typological analysis of the pipes that it produced. It was sampled for archaeomagntic analysis in the hope that it would therefore provide useful calibration evidence to feed into the UK Archaeomagnetic Calibration Curve. The mean thermoremanent direction obtained was of good precision and translated into a date range of 1726 to 1768 cal AD for the firing of the kiln.
