RE-EXAMINATION OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE MATERIAL FROM THE BEDERN FOUNDRY SITE, YORK

Author(s): C Mortimer

A re-examination of the extant collection of material from high-temperature processes at this medieval site demonstrated that a range of copper alloys were being used for casting, including some which contained elevated levels of antimony and arsenic. Red, brown, black and green glasses were accidentally formed during heating and melting of the non-ferrous metals. Evidence for a number of other metalworking processes were also detected, including small amounts of ironworking and silver purification or refining. The range and proportions of high-temperature material at the Bedern Foundry were found to be comparable with those in neighbouring contexts.
